Busuu, a language-learning app with a human-first approach, needed a design system and brand toolkit that could scale with its rapid growth. When I joined Busuu, I inherited a solid foundation, but it was quickly reaching its limits. My challenge was to lead a complete overhaul and refresh of the design system to meet the evolving needs of both the brand and product teams.
This involved a complete revamp of the Figma toolkit, prioritising the creation of flexible and scalable assets. With product-led marketing driving much of Busuu's success, high-quality product visualisations were critical. A key focus was streamlining the localisation process for artwork across 15 interface languages and their sub-variables.
The illustration system also underwent a complete overhaul. I commissioned a new suite of assets by Fuchsia MacAree specifically designed to empower the in-house team to flexibly animate, repurpose, and rescale every detail, while maintaining consistency across varying scales, use cases, and brand tones. This new illustration library provided the team with the tools they needed to create engaging and consistent visuals across all platforms.
